We are committed to sustaining leadership in academic and career achievement for women in Sierra Leone. With the recent inclusion of computer science and ICT in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), AWMS faces three significant challenges that we aim to address through this project.
This project is led by AWOGA UK, however the other alumni groups are supporting this campaign.
As part of the 2Rs Project, the school has undergone significant improvements to preserve and enhance its historic structures. Thanks to the generous support of AWOGA (the school’s Alumni Association) Worldwide, several key areas have been restored and upgraded. These renovations mark a critical step in preserving the school’s legacy while creating a safer, stronger, and more functional environment for all.
The roof of the school hall has been overhauled and replaced with brand-new roofing to address structural wear and ensure long-term durability. This upgrade provides a safer and more weather-resistant space for school gatherings and events.
The administrative block roof has also been replaced, preventing further deterioration and protecting vital administrative operations housed within the building.
In a significant structural improvement, the original wooden floor slabs in the Admin Block were replaced with reinforced concrete, greatly enhancing fire safety and structural resilience. Additionally, the balcony ceiling has been renovated to improve its appearance and structural integrity, ensuring the safety of both staff and students who use the space.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the school has seen important upgrades aimed at improving accessibility and enhancing the beauty of the campus. Thanks to the generous support of AWOGA, several key areas—including the main entrance, Chapel surroundings, and the Senior Secondary School block (formerly the Boarding Home)—have been enhanced creating a safer and more welcoming environment for all.
The main entrance pavement has been rehabilitated with a fresh layer of new reinforced concrete, replacing the worn and uneven surface. The durable new surface is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and weather conditions, contributing to the long-term functionality of the gateway while also improving safety and accessibility for students, staff, and visitors.
This project is currently in the preparatory phase. Initial bids were requested from contractors, but due to misunderstandings in the technical specifications, the bids could not be assessed fairly. After seeking guidance from a technical engineer, we are now focusing on the section of the perimeter wall behind the school chapel, which has been identified as a significant security threat. Bids for this section will be sent out soon, with the aim of commencing work in April. Additional sections of the perimeter wall will be addressed as funding allows.
To promote sustainability, we’ve expanded our solar energy system, now powering the school chapel, classrooms, submersible pump, and surface pumps. Phase 2 saw the addition of six 445-watt solar panels, one lithium battery, and other essential components, reducing reliance on the national grid and ensuring a more eco-friendly and reliable energy supply for our school community.
The senior school toilets have been fully renovated, providing modern, hygienic facilities for our pupils. This upgrade greatly enhances daily comfort and well-being for our senior students.

The lower court has been identified as a potential project for future development, with plans to clear, pave, and install mesh fencing, depending on available funds after the completion of higher-priority projects.
